Zimbabwe
Mesmerising is the word most often used to describe Stella Chiweshe's performance. She plays the mbira, a traditional thumb piano with an evocative, mysterious tone. On stage the instrument's delicate sounds contrast effectively with her swooping vocals and the dexterous rhythms of percussion player Gilson. In Zimbabwe the playing of the mbira is a male tradition, but, since convincing her uncle to instruct her in the music of her ancestors, Stella has become the acknowledged queen of the instrument. Her presence is magic, her music will touch your soul.
